The Big Think team can be seen around the community giving back in various ways. From helping small businesses with one-on-one pro bono guidance and support to helping put on community events, we get involved and support our peeps.
TEDx Raleigh is the local Raleigh version of TED, the movement that shares ideas worth spreading. For 2016, Big Think’s Chuck Hester was the Communications team lead for TEDx Raleigh, and Craig Mathews led the initial WOW! team, participated in the Hospitality team, and then handled volunteer coordination the day of the event – spreadin’ the love. Chuck and his team did such a great job on communications and marketing that over 180 tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes, encouraging us to extend to a second venue for a LiveStream live telecast across the street. The event was a big hit!
Small Business Support
Craig has been coaching startups for UNC Business School’s Executive MBA SoftLaunch venture class for the past nine years, providing his insights and guidance to students considering entrepreneurship, often for the first time. Many companies have started from there and turned into viable businesses. Craig has also worked with startups through the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED).
Craig, Chuck, and Brian also choose companies to help , both individually and collectively. When a company is too small to pay for our assistance, but we really like the founder(s) and what they’re up to, sometimes we choose to just give it to help them along. We believe wholeheartedly that what goes around comes around.
